Why Disable Focus Assist Automatic Rules?
Focus Assist (now called “Do Not Disturb” in recent Windows 11 updates) is designed to minimize distractions by hiding notifications when you are performing specific tasks. By default, Windows 11 includes several automatic rules that trigger this mode, such as when you are playing a game, duplicating your display, or using an app in full-screen mode. While useful for some, these automatic triggers can cause you to miss critical emails, messages, or calendar alerts simply because you expanded a video to full screen. If you prefer to manage your notifications manually, you can completely disable these automatic rules using the Registry Editor.
How to Disable Automatic Rules via Registry Editor
Using the Registry Editor allows you to forcefully disable the automatic triggers, ensuring Windows 11 never turns on Do Not Disturb without your explicit instruction. Always proceed with caution when editing the registry.
- Press the Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog box.
- Type
regeditand press Enter. Click Yes if prompted by the User Account Control (UAC). - In the Registry Editor, navigate to the following path by pasting it into the address bar at the top:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\QuietHours- Note: If you do not see a “QuietHours” folder under CurrentVersion, you will need to create it. Right-click CurrentVersion, select New > Key, and name it QuietHours.
Creating the Necessary Registry Values
Once you are in the QuietHours key, you need to create specific values to disable each automatic rule.
- Right-click in the empty space in the right pane, select New, and then choose DWORD (32-bit) Value.
- To disable the rule that turns on Focus Assist when duplicating your display, name the new value:
EnablePresentationRule. Double-click it and ensure the Value data is set to 0. - To disable the rule that turns on Focus Assist when playing a full-screen game, create a new DWORD named:
EnableGameRuleand set the Value data to 0. - To disable the rule that turns on Focus Assist when using an app in full-screen mode, create a new DWORD named:
EnableFullScreenRuleand set the Value data to 0.
Applying the Changes
After creating these values and setting them to 0, the automatic rules are effectively disabled at the registry level.
- Close the Registry Editor.
- Restart your computer or sign out and sign back in to ensure the changes are fully applied.
Windows 11 will now rely entirely on your manual activation of Do Not Disturb via the Action Center, ensuring you never miss important notifications due to an automatic system rule.
