How to Disable the Desktop Wallpaper in Windows 11

The Performance Cost of Wallpapers

By default, Windows 11 ships with a bright, high-resolution desktop wallpaper (the blue “bloom” graphic). While this looks beautiful, rendering a massive 4K image across the entire background of your monitor requires your graphics card (GPU) and system RAM to dedicate resources just to draw a picture you rarely see behind your open windows. If you are using a severely underpowered laptop, a budget virtual machine, or if you simply prefer a stark, minimalist, distraction-free desktop environment, you should completely strip the wallpaper away and replace it with a solid color.

How to Disable the Desktop Background

You can strip away the image rendering entirely via the Personalization settings.

  1. Click the Start Menu and type Settings, or press the Windows Key + I.
  2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Personalization.
  3. In the main window, click on Background.
  4. Look for the dropdown menu labeled “Personalize your background.” By default, it is set to “Picture.”
  5. Click the dropdown menu and select Solid color.
  6. A grid of colored squares will appear below. Select the Black square (or click “Custom colors” if you prefer a dark grey).

The Minimalist Desktop

The change is absolute and instantaneous. Windows 11 will immediately dump the massive image file from your system RAM. Your desktop will become a pure, solid black void. This not only frees up a tiny amount of system resources for older machines, but it also creates a high-contrast environment that makes your desktop icons and application windows significantly easier to see.
