How to Customise Sound Schemes and System Audio Alerts in Windows 11

Windows 11 features a soft, refined collection of ambient system sounds designed to be less jarring than legacy Windows chimes. However, depending on your work environment, you may prefer custom auditory cues for critical errors, distinct notification chimes, nostalgic classic sounds, or complete silence. While modern Settings manages overall volume, the classic Windows Sound Scheme applet remains available to customize individual operating system sound events.

Accessing the Classic Sound Event Control Panel

Because Microsoft migrated general volume to the modern Settings app, accessing the full event sound scheme requires navigation through sound properties:

  1. Press Win + R on your keyboard to open the Run dialogue box.
  2. Type mmsys.cpl and press Enter.
  3. Alternatively, open Settings > System > Sound, scroll down to More sound settings, and click it.
  4. In the Sound window that pops up, switch to the Sounds tab.

Changing Sound Schemes or Muting All System Alerts

If you prefer a silent computing environment without annoying error chimes:

  1. Under the Sound Scheme dropdown menu, you will see Windows Default.
  2. Select No Sounds to instantly silence all operating system pings, alerts, and calendar chimes while leaving music, videos, and game audio unaffected.
  3. Click Apply to commit the change.

Assigning Custom Audio Chimes to Specific System Events

You can assign bespoke audio files to individual trigger events (such as low battery alerts, device connects, or empty recycling bin sounds):

  1. In the Program Events box, scroll through the list to find the event you want to customize (e.g., Notification, Asterisk, Device Connect, or Critical Battery Alarm).
  2. Highlight the event name.
  3. Click the Sounds dropdown at the bottom to choose from dozens of pre-installed Windows audio clips.
  4. Click the Test button to preview how the chime sounds.
  5. To use your own audio file, click Browse… and select any standard .wav file stored on your PC.
  6. Click Apply and OK to save your customized scheme.

Toggling the Windows 11 Startup Sound

If you prefer your PC to boot up in silence without broadcasting a chime in libraries or offices:

  • On the same Sounds configuration tab, locate the checkbox at the bottom labeled Play Windows Startup sound.
  • Check the box to hear the welcoming boot chime, or uncheck it for completely silent startup boots.
