How to Create a Secret, Invisible Folder on Your Windows Desktop

If you share a Windows computer with family members or roommates, keeping sensitive documents (like tax returns or journal entries) private can be difficult without resorting to complex encryption software. While Windows does have a native “Hidden Items” feature, most moderately tech-savvy users know how to check the “Show Hidden Files” box in the File Explorer. For a clever, low-tech alternative, you can exploit a quirk in the Windows operating system to create a folder on your desktop that is completely invisible to the naked eye—it has no name and no icon, yet remains entirely accessible if you know exactly where to click.

Step 1: Create a Nameless Folder

The first step to creating an invisible folder is removing its text label. You cannot simply delete the text and hit Enter, as Windows will instantly revert it to “New Folder”. Instead, you must use a special blank character code.

1. Right-click on an empty space on your Windows Desktop.
2. Select New > Folder.
3. The folder will appear with the words “New Folder” highlighted in blue, ready for you to type a name.
4. If you have a full-sized keyboard with a numeric keypad on the right side: Hold down the Alt key, type 0160 on the numeric keypad, and then release the Alt key. (You must use the dedicated number pad; the numbers across the top row of the keyboard will not work).
5. If you are on a laptop without a numeric keypad: Open the Start Menu and search for Character Map. Open the app, scroll down until you find a completely blank square (usually near the top), click it, click Select, and then click Copy. Paste that blank character into the folder name on your desktop.
6. Press Enter.

Your folder will now exist on the desktop with absolutely no text underneath it.

Step 2: Make the Icon Invisible

Now that the name is gone, you must remove the yellow manila folder icon.

1. Right-click on your new nameless folder and select Properties at the bottom of the menu.
2. Click on the Customize tab at the top of the Properties window.
3. At the bottom of this tab, click the Change Icon… button.
4. A new window will appear showing dozens of system icons (trees, stars, CDs, etc.). Scroll horizontally to the right.
5. Eventually, you will see a large gap of empty, blank space between the icons. These are actually invisible icon files included in Windows.
6. Click on one of the blank, empty spaces to select an invisible icon, and click OK.
7. Click Apply, and then click OK on the main Properties window.

How to Find Your Invisible Folder

Your folder has now completely vanished from the desktop. It is entirely transparent.

To find it and open it, you must remember roughly where you placed it. Simply click and drag your mouse across that area of the desktop to create a blue selection box. When the selection box passes over the invisible folder, a faint blue highlight will appear in the shape of a small square. You can then double-click that blue square to open the folder and access your files normally.

Security Warning: This is a fun visual trick, not a genuine security protocol. If someone searches for a specific file using the Windows Start Menu search bar, the files inside this invisible folder will still appear in the search results. Do not use this method for highly sensitive corporate data.
