How to Create a Desktop Shortcut in Windows 11

The Navigational Friction Vector

While the Windows 11 Start Menu and Taskbar are excellent for frequently used applications, burying a critical, daily-use Excel spreadsheet or a specific project folder deep within a nested directory structure creates unnecessary navigational friction. To maximize efficiency, you need immediate, single-click access to specific files directly from your desktop workspace.

How to Create a Desktop Shortcut

You can force Windows 11 to generate a symbolic link—a lightweight pointer file—that sits on your desktop and instantly teleports you to the target file, regardless of where it is physically stored on your hard drive.

1. Open the File Explorer and navigate to the exact file, application (.exe), or folder you want to shortcut.
2. Right-click the target item.
3. In Windows 11, the context menu is heavily truncated. You must select Show more options (or press Shift + F10) to reveal the legacy menu.
4. Hover your cursor over the Send to option.
5. Select Desktop (create shortcut) from the fly-out menu.
6. The window will not change, but if you minimize the File Explorer, you will see a new icon resting on your desktop, designated by a small blue arrow in its bottom-left corner.
7. Alternative Method (Drag and Drop): You can also simply hold down the Alt key on your keyboard, then click and drag the target file directly from the File Explorer window onto your desktop background. When you release the mouse button, a shortcut will instantly generate.

Because these are merely pointers, you can delete a desktop shortcut at any time without harming the original file.
