How to Completely Disable ‘Remote Desktop’ (RDP) Connections in Windows 11

Windows 11 Pro and Enterprise editions include a powerful built-in feature called Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). When enabled, this service opens port 3389 on your computer, allowing another user on the local network (or across the internet, if port-forwarded) to take complete graphical control of your machine, exactly as if they were sitting physically at your keyboard.

While RDP is an essential tool for IT administrators managing massive fleets of corporate workstations, it is an extreme security liability for standard users. If you accidentally leave RDP enabled on a laptop connected to a public coffee shop Wi-Fi network, any malicious actor on that same network can aggressively brute-force your Windows login password. If they succeed, they instantly gain full administrative control over your entire filesystem and all your logged-in accounts. To guarantee that your computer is mathematically impossible to control remotely, you must completely disable the Remote Desktop service.

Disabling RDP via the System Settings

You can instantly kill the RDP listening daemon directly from the modern Windows 11 Settings app.

  1. Click the Start button on your taskbar and click the gear icon to open the Settings app.
  2. In the left-hand navigation sidebar, ensure System is selected.
  3. Scroll down the main panel on the right side and click on Remote Desktop.
  4. At the very top of the menu, you will see a master toggle switch labelled Remote Desktop.
  5. Click the toggle switch to turn it Off.
  6. A popup dialogue box will appear asking you to confirm the action. Click the Confirm button.

Verifying the Lockdown

The change takes effect instantly; no reboot is required. The Windows kernel immediately terminates the TermService daemon and instructs the Windows Defender Firewall to aggressively block all incoming traffic on TCP and UDP port 3389.

Your Windows 11 machine is now an isolated fortress. Even if another user on your network knows your exact IP address and your administrator password, their remote connection client will simply time out when attempting to connect, ensuring absolute physical security.
