How to Completely Disable ‘Autoplay’ (Removable Media Actions) in Windows 11

Windows 11 includes a legacy feature called “AutoPlay.” Whenever you plug a USB flash drive, an external hard drive, or a smartphone into your computer, AutoPlay immediately scans the contents of the drive and presents a popup menu asking what you want to do with the files (e.g., “Import photos and videos,” “Play media,” or “Open folder to view files”).

While this might save a novice user a single click, it is a massive security vulnerability and a constant annoyance for power users. If you plug in a colleague’s USB drive that happens to be infected with a malicious payload, AutoPlay’s automatic scanning and execution prompt is the exact vector that allows the malware to execute and jump to your local machine. Furthermore, if you plug your smartphone in purely to charge the battery, you do not want an intrusive popup interrupting your workflow every single time. To harden your computer against USB-borne malware and stop the annoying popups, you must completely disable AutoPlay.

Disabling AutoPlay via Windows Settings

You can turn off this feature globally for all devices directly from the modern Windows Settings menu.

1. Click the Start button and select the Settings gear icon (or press Windows Key + i).
2. In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on Bluetooth & devices.
3. Scroll down the main panel and click on AutoPlay.
4. At the very top of the screen, you will see a master toggle switch labelled Use AutoPlay for all media and devices.
5. Click the toggle switch to turn it Off.

Disabling AutoPlay via Group Policy (Pro/Enterprise Only)

For system administrators who want to guarantee that no user can re-enable this feature, you should enforce a strict AutoPlay policy at the OS level.

1. Press the Windows Key + R to open the Run dialogue box.
2. Type gpedit.msc and press Enter to open the Local Group Policy Editor.
3. Navigate to this exact path:
   Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> AutoPlay Policies
4. In the right-hand panel, double-click on Turn off AutoPlay.
5. Select the Enabled radio button in the top-left corner.
6. Under the “Options” section, ensure the dropdown menu is set to All drives.
7. Click Apply and then OK.

Your Windows 11 installation will now completely ignore newly connected media. When you plug in a USB drive, the operating system will silently mount it, leaving it safely untouched until you manually navigate to it via File Explorer.
