How to Clear Your Clipboard History in Windows

The Windows clipboard is incredibly convenient, allowing you to quickly copy and paste text, images, and links between applications. However, if you recently enabled the “Clipboard History” feature (by pressing Windows Key + V), Windows is no longer just remembering the last thing you copied—it is keeping a running log of the last 25 items you copied. If you regularly copy sensitive information like passwords, client social security numbers, or private URLs, having them sit exposed in your clipboard history is a massive security risk. Anyone who sits at your unlocked computer can simply press Windows Key + V and view your sensitive data.

How to Clear Your Entire Clipboard History

If you want to wipe the slate clean and permanently delete all saved text snippets and images from your clipboard memory, you can do so directly from the Windows Settings app.

1. Click the Start Menu (the Windows logo on your taskbar).
2. Click the Settings icon (the gear).
3. In the Settings window, select System from the left-hand sidebar.
4. Scroll down the main pane and click on Clipboard.
5. Look for the section labeled “Clear clipboard data.”
6. Click the Clear button next to it.

This will instantly and irreversibly delete all standard items currently saved in your clipboard history. (Note: If you have specifically “pinned” items to your clipboard, those pinned items will not be deleted by this button. They must be removed manually).

How to Delete Individual Items from the History

If you have several useful items in your clipboard (like an email template you are pasting repeatedly) but you just accidentally copied a password, you do not need to nuke the entire history. You can surgically remove the single sensitive item.

1. Press Windows Key + V on your keyboard to manually open the Clipboard History overlay panel.
2. Scroll through the list of saved items until you find the specific text or image you want to delete.
3. Click the three horizontal dots (…) located in the top right corner of that specific item’s box.
4. From the small dropdown menu, click Delete (the trash can icon).

The item will vanish from the history, leaving the rest of your copied data intact.

How to Disable Clipboard History Completely

If the concept of a running clipboard log makes you uncomfortable and you want Windows to revert to its classic behavior (only remembering one item at a time and forgetting it instantly when you copy something new), you should turn the feature off entirely.

1. Navigate back to Settings > System > Clipboard.
2. Find the toggle switch labeled Clipboard history.
3. Click the toggle to turn it Off.

Disabling the feature instantly deletes any existing history and ensures that pressing Windows Key + V will no longer display a log of your copied data.
