When you purchase a new stick of RAM (Random Access Memory) or a pre-built gaming PC, the manufacturer usually advertises the maximum theoretical speed of the memory, such as 3200 MHz or 6000 MHz. However, simply plugging the RAM into the motherboard does not guarantee it will run at that speed. Many motherboards default to a much slower, safe baseline speed (like 2133 MHz) until you manually enable an XMP or EXPO profile in the BIOS.
Before you start digging through complex BIOS menus, you should check exactly what speed your RAM is currently running at inside Windows 11.
How to Check RAM Speed in Task Manager
You do not need to install third-party diagnostic tools like CPU-Z to find this information. Windows 11 displays it natively.
- Open the Windows 11 Task Manager. The fastest way to do this is to press
Ctrl + Shift + Escon your keyboard, or right-click the Start button and select “Task Manager” from the context menu. - In the left-hand navigation pane of the Task Manager, click on the Performance tab (the icon looks like a small heartbeat monitor or a zig-zag graph).
- In the middle column, click on Memory.
- Look at the bottom-right corner of the main window, just below the large usage graphs.
- Locate the metric labeled Speed.
The number displayed here (e.g., 3200 MHz) is the exact, real-time frequency at which your motherboard is currently driving your memory modules.
If this number is significantly lower than what is printed on the physical sticker on your RAM sticks (for example, if you bought 3600 MHz RAM but Windows says it is running at 2133 MHz), you are actively losing performance. You will need to restart your computer, enter the UEFI/BIOS, and enable the XMP (Extreme Memory Profile) setting to force the motherboard to run the memory at its advertised speed.
