How to Change the Windows 11 Taskbar Color to Match Your Wallpaper

By default, Windows 11 features a bright, light-themed taskbar and Start menu. While clean, this stark white interface can often clash harshly with your carefully chosen desktop wallpaper. Many users prefer a more cohesive aesthetic where the operating system’s interface subtly reflects the colours of their background image.

Windows 11 includes a feature that can automatically analyse your current wallpaper, extract the dominant “Accent Colour,” and apply it directly to the taskbar and Start menu.

Step 1: Switch to Custom Color Mode

Before you can apply colour to the taskbar, you must ensure Windows is not locked into the default “Light” theme, as Microsoft restricts taskbar colouring in that specific mode to maintain text readability.

  1. Click the Start button and select the Settings gear icon (or press Windows Key + I).
  2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Personalisation.
  3. Click on Colours.
  4. Look for the top dropdown menu labelled Choose your mode.
  5. Click the menu and change it from “Light” to Custom.
  6. Two new options will appear below it. Change Choose your default Windows mode to Dark. (You can leave your default app mode as Light if you prefer your application windows to remain white).

Step 2: Enable Automatic Accent Colors

Now that the system interface is set to Dark, you can apply your wallpaper’s colours to it.

  1. Remain in the Settings > Personalisation > Colours menu.
  2. Scroll down to the Accent colour setting.
  3. Click the dropdown menu next to it (which is likely set to “Manual”) and change it to Automatic. Windows will instantly analyse your wallpaper and pick a matching colour.
  4. Finally, scroll down to the very bottom of the page.
  5. Look for the toggle switch labelled Show accent colour on Start and taskbar.
  6. Click the toggle to turn it On.

Your taskbar and Start menu will immediately shift from dark grey to a rich, colourful hue that perfectly complements your background image.

Does it Update Automatically?

Yes. The true benefit of setting the Accent Colour to “Automatic” is that it dynamically updates. If you have Windows configured to rotate through a slideshow of wallpapers every 30 minutes, or if you use the Windows Spotlight feature to get a new background every day, the taskbar colour will magically transition to a new matching hue the moment the wallpaper changes.
