How to Change the Refresh Rate in Windows 11

The Hardware Calibration Vector

If you purchase a high-end, 144Hz gaming monitor, simply plugging the HDMI or DisplayPort cable into your PC is insufficient. By default, the Windows 11 graphics architecture will aggressively throttle the video output, locking the monitor to a standard, cinematic 60 frames per second (60Hz) to ensure maximum compatibility. To utilize the hardware you actually paid for and achieve fluid, high-velocity motion, you must manually instruct the operating system to increase the temporal refresh rate.

How to Change the Refresh Rate

Microsoft integrated advanced monitor telemetry directly into the primary Display Settings matrix, allowing you to alter the hardware output frequency without entering complex GPU control panels.

1. The Rapid Access Trigger:
* Minimize all applications so you are looking at your blank Windows 11 Desktop.
* Right-click anywhere on the empty desktop space.
* From the context menu, select Display settings.
2. The Advanced Matrix:
* You are now in the primary Display menu. Scroll down past the resolution and scaling options.
* Under the “Related settings” header, click on Advanced display.
3. Targeting the Hardware:
* If you have a dual-monitor setup, look at the dropdown menu at the very top (labelled “Select a display to view or change its settings”). Ensure you have selected the specific high-end monitor you wish to configure.
* Look at the section labelled “Display information” to verify the current active resolution and Hz limit.
4. The Execution Phase:
* Look for the dropdown menu explicitly labelled Choose a refresh rate.
* Click the menu. It will display a list of every frequency mathematically supported by your monitor and your graphics card.
* Select the absolute highest number available (e.g., 144 Hz, 165 Hz, or 240 Hz).
5. The Hardware Handshake: The screen will instantly go black for two seconds as the graphics card renegotiates the signal timing with the monitor. When the image returns, a small box will ask if you want to “Keep these display settings.” You have exactly 15 seconds to click Keep changes before Windows automatically reverts to the slower speed.
