How to Boot Windows 11 into Safe Mode

When Windows 11 experiences critical errors—such as constant blue screens, driver conflicts, or severe malware infections—it can become impossible to troubleshoot normally. In these scenarios, you need to boot into Safe Mode.

Safe Mode is a diagnostic environment that starts Windows with only the bare minimum drivers and services required to run. This isolates third-party software and corrupted drivers, allowing you to safely uninstall problematic programs or run virus scans.

Method 1: Booting into Safe Mode via Settings (If Windows Starts Normally)

If you can still log into Windows 11, the easiest way to access Safe Mode is through the advanced startup options in the Settings menu.

  1. Click the Start button and select the gear icon to open Settings (or press Windows Key + I).
  2. In the “System” tab, scroll down and click on Recovery.
  3. Under the “Recovery options” section, locate Advanced startup and click the Restart now button.
  4. Windows will prompt you to save your work. Click Restart now again to confirm.
  5. Your PC will reboot into a blue “Choose an option” screen.
  6. Navigate to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings.
  7. Click the Restart button in the bottom right corner.
  8. After your PC reboots again, you will see a list of numbered startup options. Press the 4 or F4 key on your keyboard to start in standard Safe Mode. If you need internet access to download drivers or antivirus software, press 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.

Method 2: Booting into Safe Mode from the Lock Screen

If your computer boots to the login screen but freezes or crashes immediately after you log in, you can trigger the advanced startup menu without accessing the desktop.

  1. At the Windows 11 login screen, click the Power icon in the bottom right corner.
  2. Hold down the Shift key on your keyboard.
  3. While holding the Shift key, click Restart.
  4. Keep holding the Shift key until the blue “Choose an option” screen appears.
  5. Follow the same path as Method 1: Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  6. Press 4 or 5 to enter Safe Mode.

Method 3: Booting into Safe Mode When Windows Fails to Start (The 3-Crash Method)

If Windows 11 is completely broken and cannot even reach the login screen, you must force the operating system into its automatic repair mode by interrupting the boot sequence three times.

  1. Press and hold the physical power button on your computer to force it to shut down.
  2. Press the power button to turn it back on.
  3. As soon as you see the Windows logo (or your manufacturer’s logo) appear on the screen, press and hold the power button again to force a hard shutdown.
  4. Repeat this process a second time.
  5. Turn the computer on for a third time. Windows will detect the repeated failures and automatically boot into the “Preparing Automatic Repair” environment.
  6. Allow the diagnostic to run. When it finishes, you will see a screen stating that automatic repair could not fix your PC. Click the Advanced options button.
  7. Navigate to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, and press 4 or 5 to enter Safe Mode.

How to Exit Safe Mode

To exit Safe Mode, all you usually need to do is restart your computer normally. Click the Start button, click the Power icon, and select Restart. Windows will boot back into its standard mode.

By mastering these three methods, you can regain control of a broken Windows 11 system and perform the necessary troubleshooting to get it running smoothly again.
