There is nothing worse than presenting a professional slideshow to your boss in a meeting, only to have a loud, distracting personal email notification pop up in the corner of your screen. To prevent these embarrassing interruptions, Windows 11 includes a powerful “Do Not Disturb” feature. Rather than remembering to toggle it on and off manually every time you enter a meeting, you can program Windows to engage it automatically based on what you are doing.
How to Configure Automatic Do Not Disturb
Windows 11 allows you to set up intelligent triggers that automatically silence your notifications when you need to focus or present.
- Open the Settings app on your computer (Windows Key + I).
- Click on System in the left-hand sidebar.
- Click on Notifications on the right side of the screen.
- Look for the section labeled Do not disturb. Do not click the toggle switch next to it (that turns it on immediately). Instead, click on the small downward-pointing arrow to expand the menu and reveal the Turn on do not disturb automatically options.
Choosing Your Triggers
You will now see a list of checkboxes. You can enable any or all of these rules:
- During these times: This allows you to set a rigid daily schedule. If you want total silence every day between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM for deep work, you can set the clock here.
- When duplicating my display: This is the most important setting for professionals. If you plug your laptop into a projector or a conference room television to share your screen, Windows will instantly silence all notifications so the audience does not read your private messages.
- When playing a game: If you launch a video game in full-screen mode, Windows will suppress background alerts so they do not ruin your immersion or cause your game to stutter.
- When using an app in full-screen mode: This is excellent if you frequently watch movies on Netflix or edit videos in Premiere Pro and do not want popups appearing over your video.
Simply check the boxes that fit your lifestyle. From now on, Windows 11 will quietly manage your notifications in the background, holding them silently in the Notification Center until you are finished presenting or gaming.
