How to Automatically Disable the Touchpad When a Mouse is Connected in Windows 11

If you prefer using a physical wireless or Bluetooth mouse with your Windows 11 laptop, keeping the built-in trackpad enabled can actually become a massive annoyance. As you type, the palm of your hand will inevitably brush against the touchpad, causing your cursor to jump wildly across the screen or accidentally click outside of your document. To prevent this, Windows includes a brilliant setting that automatically turns off the trackpad the exact second you plug in a real mouse.

How to Configure the Touchpad Settings

This automated feature is built directly into the Windows 11 device settings.

  1. Open the Settings app by pressing Windows Key + I on your keyboard.
  2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Bluetooth & devices.
  3. Scroll down the main window and click on Touchpad.
  4. At the very top of this page, look for the main “Touchpad” toggle switch (which should currently be turned On).
  5. Click the small downward-facing Arrow on the far right side of that toggle to expand the menu.
  6. You will reveal a hidden checkbox labelled Leave touchpad on when a mouse is connected.
  7. Click the checkbox to uncheck it.

The change takes effect immediately. The next time you plug in a USB mouse or connect a Bluetooth mouse, Windows will instantly kill all power and responsiveness to your laptop’s built-in trackpad. You can rest your palms heavily on it while typing without any fear of moving the cursor. The very second you unplug your mouse or turn it off, the trackpad will instantly wake back up and resume normal function.
