Whenever you click the Search box on your Windows 11 taskbar to look for an app, a document, or a web query, Microsoft logs that activity to speed up future searches. Over time, this history populates the “Recent” list that appears the moment you open the Search panel. If you share a family computer or use your laptop to present screens in business meetings, you might not want everyone seeing exactly what files or queries you have been searching for recently.
How to Clear the History Manually
You can instantly wipe your entire device search history with a single click inside the Settings app.
- Open the Settings app by pressing Windows Key + I.
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on Privacy & security.
- Scroll down to the “Windows permissions” section and click on Search permissions.
- Scroll down until you find the History section.
- Click the large Clear device search history button.
The change is immediate. If you open your taskbar search box right now, the “Recent” list will be completely empty.
How to Turn Off Search History Permanently
If you never want Windows to save your local searches in the first place, you can disable the feature entirely from this exact same menu.
- In the same Search permissions menu, look right above the “Clear” button.
- Find the toggle switch labelled Search history on this device.
- Click the toggle to turn it Off.
From now on, Windows 11 will never populate the recent items list, ensuring your local file searches and web queries remain entirely private.
