How to Activate the Smart Chip Menu
You do not need to navigate through complex formatting menus to insert a Smart Chip. The entire system is triggered by a single keystroke.
- Open a Google Docs document on your desktop computer.
- Click anywhere on the blank page to place your cursor.
- Type the
@(At) symbol on your keyboard.
The moment you type that symbol, a dynamic, highly intelligent drop-down menu will instantly appear directly beneath your cursor.
Types of Smart Chips You Can Insert
The `@` menu offers several powerful integrations that dramatically improve the organization of your document.
- Tagging People: Type
@followed immediately by a coworker’s name (e.g.,@JohnSmith). A neat, clickable grey bubble will appear containing their email address and profile picture. If you assign them a task, Google will automatically email them a notification. - Linking Files: Type
@followed by the name of an existing Google Drive file (e.g.,@Q3Budget). A dynamic link will appear. If a reader hovers their mouse over the chip, Google Docs will generate a live, miniature preview of the spreadsheet without forcing them to open a new tab. - Inserting Dates: Type
@dateand press Enter. A dynamic calendar chip will drop right into the middle of your sentence. Clicking the chip allows anyone to quickly view the date on a calendar grid, ensuring everyone is perfectly aligned on project deadlines.
