Google Docs features a highly aggressive AutoFormat tool. If you type the number 1. followed by a space and a word, Google Docs instantly converts your text into a formal, indented numbered list. If you press Enter, it automatically generates a 2. on the next line.
While this is convenient for outlining, it can completely ruin the formatting of legal documents, screenplays, or technical manuals where you might simply be referencing “Clause 1.” or “Step 1.5” without wanting the entire paragraph to violently jump half an inch to the right and adopt formal list properties.
If you want to maintain complete manual control over your document’s layout and indentations, you can easily turn off automatic list generation.
How to Disable Automatic Numbered Lists
You can turn off list detection in the global Preferences menu.
- Open a document in Google Docs on a desktop web browser.
- Click on Tools in the top menu bar.
- From the drop-down menu, select Preferences.
- A pop-up window will appear. Ensure you are on the General tab.
- Look for the checkbox labeled Automatically detect lists.
- Uncheck this box.
- Click the blue OK button at the bottom of the window to apply your changes.
From now on, when you type a number followed by a period and a space, Google Docs will treat it as normal, plain text. It will remain exactly where you typed it, flush with the margin, and pressing Enter will simply take you to a blank new line without generating the next number in the sequence.
(Note: If you ever do want a formal list, you can still highlight your manually typed text and click the “Numbered List” icon in the top toolbar).
