Working from home or in a busy public space often means your background is less than professional. Whether you have a messy bedroom, family members walking past, or a distracting coffee shop environment behind you, Microsoft Teams provides a built-in solution to maintain your privacy during video calls.
The background blur feature uses artificial intelligence to distinguish your silhouette from your surroundings. It keeps your face and body in sharp focus while applying a heavy blur effect to everything behind you, ensuring the attention remains entirely on you and the meeting content.
How to Blur Your Background Before a Meeting Starts
It is always best practice to configure your video settings before joining a call so you do not accidentally broadcast your private surroundings to your colleagues.
- Open Microsoft Teams and click the Join button for your scheduled meeting.
- You will be taken to the pre-join audio and video configuration screen.
- Ensure the toggle switch next to your Camera icon is turned On.
- Look for the Background filters icon (it looks like a small person with a shaded background behind them) located just below the camera toggle. Click it.
- A “Background settings” panel will open on the right side of your screen.
- Select the Blur option (usually the first tile next to the “None” option).
Your video preview will immediately update, blurring everything behind you. You can now safely click the Join now button.
How to Blur Your Background During an Active Meeting
If you have already joined a meeting and suddenly realise your background is inappropriate, you can apply the blur effect instantly without leaving the call.
- Move your mouse to bring up the main meeting control toolbar (usually located at the top of the Teams window).
- Click the More actions button (represented by three horizontal dots).
- From the drop-down menu, select Apply background effects.
- The background settings panel will open on the right side of the screen.
- Select Blur.
- Click the Apply button at the bottom of the panel. (You can also click “Preview” first if you want to verify how it looks before the rest of the meeting participants see it).
Hardware Limitations to Consider
If you follow these steps but cannot find the “Background filters” or “Apply background effects” options, your computer hardware may not support the feature.
Microsoft Teams requires a processor that supports Advanced Vector Extensions 2 (AVX2) to calculate the complex background separation in real-time. If you are using a very old laptop (typically older than 2014) or a low-powered budget device, the Teams desktop application will automatically disable all background effects to prevent the software from crashing.
