How to Prevent Microsoft Edge from Asking to Save Your Passwords

Every time you log into a new website, Microsoft Edge displays a pop-up in the corner of your screen asking, “Save password?” If you use a dedicated third-party password manager (like 1Password, Bitwarden, or LastPass), these constant prompts from Edge are both redundant and highly annoying.

Furthermore, if you share your computer with others, you may not want the browser offering to save your sensitive login credentials to its local database. Fortunately, you can easily disable Edge’s built-in password manager prompts.

How to Stop Edge from Asking to Save Passwords

You can turn off these prompts with a simple toggle in the browser’s profile settings:

  1. Open Microsoft Edge on your Windows or Mac computer.
  2. Click the three-dot menu icon (Settings and more) in the top right corner of the browser window.
  3. Scroll down and select Settings from the drop-down menu.
  4. In the left-hand sidebar, ensure you are on the Profiles tab.
  5. Under your profile information, click on Passwords.
  6. At the very top of the Password settings page, locate the toggle switch labeled Offer to save passwords.
  7. Click the switch to turn it to the Off position.

Will This Delete My Existing Passwords?

No. Turning off the “Offer to save passwords” setting only prevents the pop-up prompt from appearing in the future. It does not delete any passwords that Microsoft Edge has already saved.

If you want to clear out passwords that Edge has previously saved, you can scroll down on that same Passwords settings page to view your saved credentials. You can delete them individually by clicking the three dots next to a password and selecting “Delete,” or you can clear them all at once by clearing your browsing data and selecting “Passwords” from the advanced clear menu.
