The biggest flaw of a traditional PowerPoint presentation is its rigid linearity. You are forced to click from Slide 1 to Slide 2 to Slide 3 in an unbroken chain. If you are pitching a product to a client and they ask a specific question about “Pricing” while you are on the “Features” slide, you have to awkwardly hit the Escape key, scroll through your thumbnails, and manually jump to the pricing section, ruining the flow of the meeting.
To create a dynamic, interactive, and non-linear presentation that feels like a modern website, you must use the Summary Zoom feature. This tool automatically builds a visual “Main Menu” slide filled with live thumbnails of your different sections. You can click on any thumbnail to instantly zoom directly into that specific topic, and when you finish that section, PowerPoint automatically zooms you right back out to the Main Menu.
Step 1: Organize Your Deck into Sections
Summary Zoom requires your presentation to be logically grouped into “Sections.”
- Open your completed PowerPoint presentation.
- Look at the left-hand thumbnail pane. Right-click in the empty space between Slide 1 and Slide 2.
- Select Add Section. Rename it to something logical (e.g., “Product Features”).
- Scroll down, right-click between Slide 10 and 11, select Add Section, and name it (e.g., “Pricing Model”).
- Repeat this process until your entire deck is grouped into logical chapters.
Step 2: Insert the Summary Zoom
Now that the architecture is built, PowerPoint can automatically generate the interactive menu.
- Click on Slide 1 (your title slide).
- On the top ribbon, click the Insert tab.
- In the “Links” group, click the Zoom icon, and select Summary Zoom from the dropdown.
Step 3: Select Your Chapters
- A large dialog box will appear displaying every slide in your deck.
- Because you built Sections in Step 1, PowerPoint has intelligently pre-selected the first slide of every single section.
- Review the selections. If you want to include a section in your Main Menu, ensure its box is checked.
- Click the Insert button.
The Result
PowerPoint will instantly generate a brand new slide directly beneath your Title slide. This new slide contains a beautiful grid of live, clickable thumbnails representing your different chapters.
Press F5 to launch your presentation.
When you arrive at the Summary Zoom slide, your mouse cursor will turn into a pointer. If the client asks about pricing, you simply click the “Pricing Model” thumbnail. The camera will execute a stunning, cinematic zoom directly into the pricing slide. You can then click through the pricing slides normally. When you reach the end of the Pricing section, the camera will automatically reverse-zoom backward, seamlessly dropping you right back onto the Main Menu grid so you can ask the client what they want to see next.
