Most PowerPoint animations are rudimentary and boring. A graphic simply “Fades In,” “Flies In” from the bottom, or “Wipes” across the screen. If you are trying to explain a complex logistical process—such as how a package moves through a factory floor, or how data flows through a network diagram—simple entry animations are completely insufficient.
To create professional, high-end infographics, you must use Motion Paths. Unlike standard animations that merely dictate how an object appears, a Motion Path allows you to draw a literal line across your slide, forcing the graphical object to physically travel along that exact geometric path, curving around other objects in real-time.
Step 1: Access the Advanced Animation Menu
- Open your PowerPoint slide and click on the object (a picture, an icon, or a shape) that you want to animate.
- Look at the main ribbon at the top of the screen and click on the Animations tab.
- Look at the main animation gallery box (where you see Fade, Fly In, etc.). Click the small downward-pointing arrow in the bottom right corner of that box to expand the entire massive menu.
Step 2: Draw the Custom Path
- Scroll all the way down to the very bottom of the expanded menu until you find a section titled Motion Paths.
- While you can choose pre-built shapes like “Circles” or “Lines,” select the icon labeled Custom Path. Your mouse cursor will instantly turn into a crosshair.
- Click exactly in the center of your object. This sets the starting point.
- Move your mouse across the screen. You will see a line drawing behind your cursor. Click the mouse once to create a “pivot point” (a corner), allowing you to zig-zag the line around other text boxes on your slide.
- When you reach the exact location where you want the object to stop, Double-Click the mouse to lock the path.
Step 3: Fine-Tune the Physics
The moment you double-click, PowerPoint will instantly preview the animation. The object will fly along the line you just drew. However, by default, the physics are often clunky.
- Click on the Animation Pane button on the ribbon to open the sidebar.
- Right-click on your new animation in the sidebar and select Effect Options….
- A small dialog box will appear. Look at the sliders for Smooth start and Smooth end.
- By default, PowerPoint makes the object slowly accelerate and slowly decelerate. If you want the object to move at a constant, mechanical speed (perfect for showing data moving through a wire), drag both the “Smooth start” and “Smooth end” sliders all the way down to 0 seconds.
- Click OK.
The Result
Press Shift + F5 to test your slide. When you click the mouse, your graphic will seamlessly travel across the exact custom trajectory you designed, navigating around obstacles and stopping precisely at its destination. This transforms a static PowerPoint slide into a dynamic, highly engaging visual simulation.
