If you are designing a self-running PowerPoint kiosk for a trade show booth, or creating a photo slideshow for a corporate event, absolute silence is awkward. You need background music. However, if you simply insert an MP3 file onto Slide 1, the music will instantly cut off the exact second the presentation transitions to Slide 2.
To fix this, you must manipulate the advanced playback settings of the audio file, instructing PowerPoint’s rendering engine to completely decouple the audio track from the slide transitions, forcing it to loop continuously in the background for the entire duration of the deck.
Step 1: Insert the Master Audio File
You must place the music file on the absolute first slide where you want the music to begin.
- Navigate to Slide 1 of your presentation.
- Click the Insert tab on the main ribbon.
- Look all the way to the far right for the “Media” group. Click Audio > Audio on My PC.
- Select your desired MP3 or WAV file and click Insert. A large speaker icon will appear in the center of your slide.
Step 2: Access the Hidden Playback Tab
The options to control how the audio behaves are completely hidden until you actively select the speaker icon.
- Click directly on the speaker icon on your slide so it is highlighted.
- Look at the very top of the PowerPoint window. A brand new, temporary tab named Playback will appear on the ribbon (usually highlighted in a different color).
- Click the Playback tab.
Step 3: Enable the Background Loop Protocol
Instead of checking three different boxes manually, Microsoft included a single, powerful macro button that configures the entire background logic for you instantly.
- In the Playback ribbon, look for the “Audio Styles” group (usually near the middle or right side).
- Click the large button labeled Play in Background.
What this button actually does behind the scenes:
- It changes the Start trigger to Automatically (so it plays without you clicking it).
- It checks the box for Play across slides (preventing it from dying on Slide 2).
- It checks the box for Loop until stopped (if your presentation is 20 minutes long, but the song is only 3 minutes, it will automatically restart the song endlessly).
- It checks the box for Hide During Show (making the ugly speaker icon completely invisible to your audience).
The Result
Press F5 to launch your presentation into full-screen mode.
The instant Slide 1 appears, the music will begin playing automatically. As you click through Slide 2, Slide 3, and Slide 4, the audio track will continue playing seamlessly, completely unaffected by your visual transitions or custom animations, creating a highly polished, professional multimedia experience.
