How to Disable the Gridlines in Microsoft PowerPoint

Microsoft PowerPoint includes a built-in grid system designed to help presenters perfectly align their text boxes, images, and shapes. When activated, a faint, dotted grid (resembling graph paper) appears across your entire slide canvas. This is incredibly helpful when designing complex infographics or architectural diagrams where precision is paramount. However, when you are simply reviewing a finished presentation or making minor text edits, the persistent dotted lines can be visually distracting and ruin the aesthetic preview of your slides. Fortunately, you can easily toggle these gridlines off with a few clicks.

How to Turn Off the Presentation Gridlines

You can remove the dotted grid directly from the main view ribbon.

  1. Open Microsoft PowerPoint and load any presentation.
  2. Look at the main Ribbon (the toolbar at the very top of the window).
  3. Click on the View tab.
  4. Locate the group of checkboxes in the section titled Show (this is usually near the middle of the ribbon).
  5. You will see a checkbox labelled Gridlines.
  6. If the grid is currently visible on your slides, this box will be checked. Click it once to uncheck it.

The dotted grid will instantly disappear from all of your slides, leaving you with a clean, unobstructed canvas. Your “Smart Guides” (the temporary red lines that appear when you drag an object to align it with another) will continue to function normally even with the main grid turned off.
