You put your Windows 11 PC to sleep at the end of the day, fully expecting it to remain silent and save power. However, at 3:00 AM, the fans spin up, the RGB lights flash on, and the computer wakes itself up completely unprompted. This “insomnia” is incredibly common in Windows and is usually caused by network adapters pinging the system, scheduled maintenance tasks triggering in the middle of the night, or hyper-sensitive USB peripherals (like a mouse) detecting microscopic vibrations.
How to Stop Network Adapters and USB Devices from Waking the PC
The most frequent culprits for unwanted wake-ups are your Ethernet/Wi-Fi cards and your mouse.
1. Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
2. Expand the Network adapters category.
3. Right-click your primary network connection (e.g., Intel Ethernet Connection or Realtek Wi-Fi) and select Properties.
4. Click the Power Management tab.
5. Uncheck the box labelled “Allow this device to wake the computer.” Click OK.
6. Repeat this exact process for your mouse: Expand Mice and other pointing devices, right-click your mouse, go to Power Management, and uncheck the wake box.
How to Disable Wake Timers
If Windows is waking up to install updates or run scheduled scans, you must disable system Wake Timers.
1. Open the Start menu, type Edit power plan, and press Enter.
2. Click the link that says Change advanced power settings.
3. In the small window that appears, scroll down and expand the Sleep section.
4. Expand the Allow wake timers sub-section.
5. Change the setting (for both “On battery” and “Plugged in”) to Disable.
6. Click Apply, then OK.
How to Find Out What Woke Your PC
If your computer continues to wake up mysteriously, you can ask Windows exactly what triggered the last wake event.
1. Right-click the Start button and select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
2. Type the following command and press Enter:
powercfg -lastwake
The system will output the exact hardware component or scheduled task that interrupted the sleep cycle, allowing you to target it directly in the Device Manager or Task Scheduler.
