How to Stop Windows 11 from Automatically Sleeping When Plugged In

The Interrupted Workflow

By default, Windows 11 is designed to be highly energy-efficient. If you step away from your computer for a coffee break, the screen will turn off, and shortly after, the entire PC will enter Sleep mode. While this is essential for saving battery life on a laptop, it is incredibly frustrating if your laptop is plugged into the wall and actively compiling a large video render, downloading a massive game, or running a complex script. When the computer goes to sleep, those background processes freeze, destroying your progress.

How to Disable Sleep Mode on AC Power

You can configure Windows 11 to use two completely different sets of rules: one for when you are running on battery, and a much more aggressive “always-on” policy for when you are plugged into an outlet.

1. Click the Start button, type Settings, and press Enter.

2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on System.

3. In the main pane, click on Power & battery.

4. Scroll down and click the Screen and sleep banner to expand the options.

5. You will see four dropdown menus governing screen and sleep timers.

6. Locate the dropdown menu labelled When plugged in, put my device to sleep after.

7. Click the dropdown menu, scroll all the way to the bottom, and select Never.

Managing the Screen Timer

While you want the computer’s CPU to stay awake to finish your downloads, you probably don’t want the actual display panel wasting electricity all night. Look at the dropdown menu directly above it: When plugged in, turn off my screen after. You can safely set this to 15 or 30 minutes. The screen will go completely black to save power and protect against image retention, but because the sleep timer is set to “Never,” your background tasks will continue running flawlessly in the dark.
