The Cluttered Morning Login
When you shut down or restart your Windows 11 computer, the operating system attempts to create a seamless transition by remembering what you were doing. If you leave several File Explorer windows open—perhaps you were digging through your Documents, Downloads, and a network drive—Windows will memorize those locations. The next time you turn your computer on and log in, Windows will automatically launch File Explorer and reload all of those specific folders, splashing them across your desktop. While Microsoft designed this as a time-saving convenience, many users find it highly annoying. It delays the startup process, clutters the screen, and forces you to manually close a bunch of windows from yesterday before you can start today’s tasks.
How to Disable the Folder Restore Feature
This behavior is controlled by a specific setting within the File Explorer options, separate from the standard Windows 11 startup apps menu.
1. Open File Explorer by clicking the yellow folder icon on your taskbar or pressing Windows Key + E.
2. Look at the top toolbar in the File Explorer window.
3. Click the three horizontal dots (See more) located on the far right side of the toolbar.
4. Select Options from the drop-down menu.
5. The “Folder Options” dialog box will appear. Click the View tab at the top of the window.
6. In the “Advanced settings” scroll box, look through the list of checkboxes. They are arranged alphabetically.
7. Scroll down to the bottom and locate the option labelled Restore previous folder windows at log-on.
8. Uncheck the box next to this option.
9. Click Apply, then click OK to close the dialog box.
From now on, you can shut down your PC with dozens of folders open, and Windows 11 will give you a completely clean, empty desktop the next time you turn it on.
A Note on Application Restores
It is important to note that disabling this setting *only* affects File Explorer windows. If you are experiencing third-party applications (like Google Chrome or Spotify) launching automatically when you turn on your PC, you need to manage your startup apps.
You can do this by opening the Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc), navigating to the Startup apps tab, right-clicking the offending application, and selecting Disable.
