The Accidental Pop-Up
Windows 11 features a Widgets board that displays news, weather, and stock prices. By default, the entry point for this board is located on the far left side of your taskbar, usually displaying the current temperature. The major annoyance of this feature is its “hover” behavior. If you are moving your mouse toward the Start button or trying to click a desktop icon in the bottom-left corner and you accidentally pass your cursor over the weather icon for even a split second, a massive, screen-obscuring panel violently slides out from the left edge of your screen, interrupting whatever you were trying to do.
How to Disable the Hover Trigger
You can configure the Widgets board so that it only opens when you explicitly click on the taskbar icon, preventing accidental mouse-over deployments.
1. Hover your mouse over the weather icon to intentionally open the Widgets board.
2. In the top-right corner of the massive Widgets panel, click the small Settings gear icon (or your profile picture).
3. In the Settings menu that appears, look for the option labelled Open Widgets board on hover.
4. Click the toggle switch next to it to turn it Off.
5. Click anywhere outside the panel to close it.
How to Remove the Widgets Icon Entirely
If you don’t use the Widgets board at all and want to completely eliminate the distraction (and free up taskbar space), you can remove the icon entirely.
1. Right-click on any empty space on your taskbar.
2. Select Taskbar settings from the small pop-up menu.
3. Look in the top section labelled “Taskbar items.”
4. Find the toggle switch for Widgets.
5. Turn it Off. The weather icon will instantly vanish from your screen.
