How to Stop Windows 11 from Automatically Deleting Unused Apps

The Missing Software

Storage space on modern laptops is often limited, and Windows 11 tries to help you manage it aggressively. One of the more extreme features buried within the operating system is the ability to automatically “archive” or delete applications that you haven’t opened in a while to free up disk space. If you install a specialized tool for filing taxes or a specific video game that you only play a few times a year, you might click its shortcut months later only to find that Windows 11 has quietly uninstalled it. The system leaves the shortcut behind, but forces you to redownload the actual software from the Microsoft Store when you try to open it, causing a massive delay when you just want to get to work.

How to Disable App Archiving in Settings

This automated deletion feature only applies to software installed via the Microsoft Store. Standard desktop applications (.exe files) you download from the internet are not affected. You can turn off this aggressive storage management directly in the Settings menu.

1. Click the Start button and select the gear icon to open Settings.

2. In the left-hand navigation pane, click on Apps.

3. Click on the Advanced app settings option in the main pane.

4. Look for the section labelled Archive apps.

5. You will see a toggle switch. The description usually notes that Windows will “save storage space and internet bandwidth” by archiving apps you don’t use frequently.

6. Click the toggle to switch it to the Off position.

Once this is disabled, Windows 11 will permanently keep its hands off your installed software. Even if you don’t open an application for three years, it will remain fully installed on your hard drive, ready to launch instantly the moment you need it.

A Note on Storage Sense

If you find that temporary files or items in your Downloads folder are disappearing, rather than whole applications, you are likely fighting a different feature called Storage Sense.

To ensure Windows isn’t deleting your personal files automatically:

1. Go to Settings > System > Storage.

2. Look for the Storage Sense toggle and turn it Off.

This guarantees that Windows 11 will never delete any file or application from your system without your explicit permission, leaving you in total control of your hard drive space.
