The Audio Hijacking Problem
Bluetooth is designed to be seamless. When you turn on your wireless headphones or a Bluetooth speaker, Windows 11 will aggressively attempt to connect to them if they have been paired previously. While this is great if you are sitting at your desk ready to listen to music, it can be a nightmare in a shared household. If your partner turns on the Bluetooth speaker in the kitchen, your Windows laptop in the home office might instantly hijack the connection, routing your private video call audio through the kitchen speaker for everyone to hear.
How to Disable Automatic Connections
If you want to keep a device paired to your PC but explicitly stop Windows from connecting to it without your direct permission, you have to dig into the Control Panel, as the modern Settings app lacks this specific toggle.
1. Click the Start button, type Control Panel, and press Enter.
2. In the top-right search box of the Control Panel, type Devices and Printers.
3. Click on View devices and printers (this will likely redirect you to the modern Settings app’s “Bluetooth & devices” page).
4. Scroll down and click on More devices and printer settings to force open the classic legacy window.
5. Find your Bluetooth headphones or speaker in the list of devices.
6. Right-click on the device and select Properties.
7. Click on the Services tab at the top of the Properties window.
8. You will see a list of Bluetooth services. Look for Audio Sink and Handsfree Telephony.
9. Untick these boxes and click OK.
The Trade-Off: Manual Management
By unticking those audio services, Windows will no longer see the device as a valid, immediate audio output, stopping the automatic hijacking. However, this means that when you do want to use those headphones with your PC, you will have to manually return to this exact menu and re-tick the boxes. For most users dealing with aggressive audio hijacking, simply turning off the PC’s master Bluetooth toggle (via the taskbar quick settings) when not actively using wireless accessories is a much faster, easier daily workaround.
