How to Stop Microsoft Excel from Automatically Showing Page Breaks

The Dotted Line Distraction

When you are working on a large spreadsheet in Microsoft Excel, you might occasionally click the “File > Print” preview just to see how a chart looks on an A4 page. However, when you hit the Escape key to return to your normal view, your spreadsheet is suddenly covered in thin, dotted gray lines. These are automatic page breaks, and Excel inserts them to show you exactly where the printer will cut your columns. While useful for formatting, they are incredibly distracting when you are just trying to enter raw data, and they refuse to disappear even if you save and reopen the file.

How to Disable Automatic Page Breaks

You can turn off these visual guides deep within the advanced display settings, forcing Excel to return to a clean, unbroken grid.

1. Open Microsoft Excel.

2. Click on the File tab in the top-left corner of the ribbon.

3. Select Options at the bottom of the left-hand green sidebar.

4. In the Excel Options window, click on Advanced in the left menu.

5. Scroll roughly halfway down the page until you find the section labelled Display options for this worksheet.

6. Untick the checkbox labelled Show page breaks.

7. Click OK at the bottom of the window.

The Workspace Specificity

It is important to note that the “Show page breaks” toggle is specific to the active worksheet, not the entire Excel application. If you have a workbook with three different tabs (e.g., Sheet1, Sheet2, Sheet3), and all of them are showing dotted lines because you previewed the entire workbook, you must click on each individual tab and repeat the process above to turn the lines off. To prevent them from appearing in the first place, try to avoid using the Print Preview screen until you are absolutely finished entering your data.
