How to Group and Name Tabs in Microsoft Edge to Reduce Clutter

If you regularly work with dozens of open websites, your browser can quickly become disorganised and difficult to navigate. Microsoft Edge includes a built-in Tab Groups feature that allows you to bundle related websites together, label them with custom names, and assign distinct colours. This feature significantly reduces browser clutter and helps you stay focused on your current task.

Why You Should Use Tab Groups

When you open too many tabs, the page titles disappear, leaving only tiny website icons that are hard to distinguish. Tab Groups solve this problem by allowing you to collapse multiple tabs under a single, colourful label. This frees up space on your tab bar and makes it easier to switch between different projects or workflows without losing your place.

Step 1: Create a New Tab Group

Grouping tabs in Microsoft Edge is a straightforward process that does not require any browser extensions.

1. Open Microsoft Edge and ensure you have at least a few tabs open.
2. Right-click on the first tab you want to include in your new group.
3. Select Add tab to a new group from the context menu.
4. A small configuration box will appear. Type a descriptive name for your group, such as “Research” or “Work Projects”.
5. Select a colour for the group to make it visually distinct.
6. Press Enter or click anywhere outside the configuration box to save the group.

You will now see your chosen name and colour highlighting the tab.

Step 2: Add More Tabs to the Group

Once your group is created, you can easily add other related tabs to it.

1. To add an existing tab, simply click and drag it into the coloured outline of your new group.
2. Alternatively, you can right-click any existing tab, select Add tab to group, and choose your newly created group from the list.
3. To open a brand new tab directly inside the group, right-click the coloured group name and select New tab in group.

Step 3: Collapse and Manage Tab Groups

The true benefit of Tab Groups is the ability to collapse them to save space.

1. Click on the coloured group name in your tab bar. All the tabs within that group will collapse, leaving only the group label visible.
2. Click the group name again to expand the tabs when you need to access them.
3. If you want to move the entire group to a new window, right-click the group name and select Move group to new window.
4. To disband the group without closing the websites, right-click the group name and select Ungroup.
