How to Start Page Numbers on a Specific Page in Microsoft Word

Adding page numbers to a Microsoft Word document seems like a simple task, but it can quickly become frustrating when you are writing a formal report, an academic thesis, or a book. In these types of documents, you usually have a Title Page and a Table of Contents at the very beginning. You do not want a giant “Page 1” printed on your Title Page. Instead, you need the actual numbering to start on page 3 or 4, where the main body of your text actually begins. To achieve this, you must use Word’s Section Break formatting.

Step 1: Insert a Section Break

Microsoft Word applies headers and footers (where page numbers live) to the entire document uniformly. To make the first few pages behave differently than the rest of the document, you have to split the document into two independent “Sections.”

  1. Scroll to the very bottom of the last page of your introductory material (e.g., the bottom of your Table of Contents page).
  2. Place your blinking cursor exactly at the end of the last word on that page.
  3. Click on the Layout tab in the top ribbon menu.
  4. Click the Breaks button.
  5. Under the “Section Breaks” header, click on Next Page.

This creates a hidden barrier. Your Title Page and Table of Contents are now in “Section 1,” and the main body of your text (starting on the next page) is now in “Section 2.”

Step 2: Disconnect the Two Sections

Even though you split the document, Word assumes you still want the footers to match by default. You must break this link.

  1. Scroll down to the first page of your main text (the start of Section 2).
  2. Double-click in the empty space at the very bottom of the page to open the Footer area.
  3. The top ribbon will automatically switch to the Header & Footer tab.
  4. Look in the “Navigation” group on the ribbon. You will see a button labeled Link to Previous that is currently highlighted in gray.
  5. Click Link to Previous to turn it OFF.

The footer in Section 2 is now completely independent from the Title Page in Section 1.

Step 3: Insert and Format the Page Numbers

Now you can safely add your numbers to Section 2 without them appearing on your Title Page.

  1. While still inside the footer of Section 2, click the Page Number button on the ribbon.
  2. Select Bottom of Page and choose a visual style (like a simple number in the bottom right corner). The number will appear, but it will likely say “Page 3” because it is still counting the Title pages.
  3. Click the Page Number button again and select Format Page Numbers….
  4. A dialog box will appear. At the bottom, under “Page numbering,” select the radio button for Start at: and type the number 1 into the box.
  5. Click OK.

Your main text will now begin perfectly on Page 1, while your Title Page and Table of Contents remain blank and unnumbered.
