When presenting scientific data, engineering concepts, or mathematical theories, you often need to display complex formulas. Typing an equation using standard keyboard characters like x^2 + y^2 = r^2 looks unprofessional and can be difficult for an audience to read from the back of a room. To ensure your formulas look exactly as they would in a printed textbook, Microsoft PowerPoint includes a built-in Equation Editor. This tool allows you to insert properly formatted fractions, integrals, matrices, and greek symbols directly onto your slides.
How to Insert an Equation
PowerPoint provides a massive library of mathematical structures and symbols that you can combine to build any formula.
- Open your presentation and navigate to the slide where you want the math formula to appear.
- Click on the Insert tab located on the top ribbon menu.
- Look all the way to the far right side of the ribbon and click on the Equation button (it has an icon of the mathematical Pi symbol, π).
- A new text box will instantly appear on your slide containing the phrase “Type equation here.”
- Simultaneously, PowerPoint will switch the top ribbon to the Equation tab, revealing the full suite of mathematical design tools.
Tip: You can also use a keyboard shortcut to instantly create a new equation box. Press Alt and the Equals Sign (=) at the same time.
Building Your Formula
You can now start typing your equation. The Equation Editor uses a combination of normal keyboard typing and structural templates.
- Basic Symbols: In the middle of the Equation ribbon, you will see a large gallery of “Symbols.” You can click here to insert characters that are not on your keyboard, such as infinity (∞), plus-minus (±), or Theta (θ).
- Fractions and Scripts: If you need to build a fraction, click the Fraction button in the “Structures” group and select a template. PowerPoint will insert a stacked fraction with empty placeholder boxes (dotted squares). Click inside a placeholder box to type your numbers. You can use the Script button to add superscripts (exponents) or subscripts in the exact same way.
- Advanced Structures: You can click the Radical, Integral, or Large Operator (Sigma) buttons to insert complex mathematical notation. You can even nest structures inside each other (for example, placing a fraction template inside the numerator of a larger fraction).
Once you are finished building the equation, click anywhere outside of the equation box. The formula is now treated exactly like normal text; you can select it and change the font size or color using the standard Home tab tools to ensure it is visible to your audience.
