How to Unhide All Worksheets at Once in Microsoft Excel

When working with complex financial models, consolidated audit workbooks, or shared business spreadsheets, team members frequently hide background calculation sheets to keep the workbook interface tidy. In legacy versions of Microsoft Excel, restoring these sheets was an exercise in frustration because the Unhide dialogue box only allowed users to select and reveal a single worksheet at a time.

Modern versions of Microsoft Excel (Microsoft 365, Excel 2021, and newer updates) now include multi-sheet selection within the native Unhide menu, alongside quick VBA automation for legacy workbooks.

Unhiding Multiple Worksheets Simultaneously in Modern Excel

If you are using Microsoft 365 or Excel 2021 on Windows or Mac, follow these steps:

  1. Open your workbook in Microsoft Excel.
  2. Right-click any visible sheet tab at the bottom of the window.
  3. Click Unhide… from the contextual menu. The Unhide dialogue box will display a list of all currently hidden sheets.
  4. To select all hidden sheets at once, click the first sheet name in the list, hold down the Shift key, and click the last sheet name. Alternatively, hold down Ctrl (Cmd on Mac) and click individual sheets to select specific non-contiguous sheets.
  5. Click OK.

Excel will instantly restore all selected worksheets to the bottom tab bar without requiring repetitive clicks.

Unhiding All Worksheets Using a One-Line VBA Macro

If you are maintaining an older Excel release that lacks multi-select support, or if a spreadsheet contains dozens of hidden sheets, you can unhide all sheets instantly using the Immediate Window:

  1. Press Alt + F11 (Fn + Option + F11 on Mac) to open the Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) editor.
  2. Press Ctrl + G to open the Immediate window at the bottom of the editor.
  3. Copy and paste the following command into the Immediate pane:
For Each ws In ActiveWorkbook.Worksheets: ws.Visible = True: Next ws
  4. Place your cursor at the end of the line and press Enter.
  5. Close the VBA Editor.

Dealing with “Very Hidden” Worksheets

If a sheet remains missing from the standard Unhide dialogue box, an administrator may have set its visibility state to xlSheetVeryHidden via VBA, which prevents it from showing in the standard interface:

  1. In the VBA editor (Alt + F11), expand your workbook in the left Project Explorer pane.
  2. Click the hidden sheet’s name.
  3. In the Properties window below (F4), locate the Visible property at the bottom of the list.
  4. Change its value from 2 - xlSheetVeryHidden to -1 - xlSheetVisible.

The sheet will immediately reappear on your active Excel tab strip.
