Whenever you highlight a cell or select a string of text inside Microsoft Excel, a faded, ghost-like toolbar appears floating just above and to the right of your cursor. If you move your mouse toward it, it solidifies into the “Mini Toolbar,” giving you quick access to font formatting, bolding, and highlighting tools without forcing you to move your mouse all the way up to the main ribbon.
While this feature is designed to speed up your workflow, many advanced users find it highly intrusive. If you use keyboard shortcuts for most of your formatting, or if you simply have a very dense, data-heavy spreadsheet, the Mini Toolbar frequently pops up exactly where you are trying to read or click, obstructing your view of the cells directly above your selection.
If you prefer a clean workspace, you can easily turn the Mini Toolbar off.
How to Disable the Mini Toolbar
This setting is controlled in the global Excel options, so disabling it once will apply the change to all your future workbooks.
- Open Microsoft Excel.
- Click on File in the top-left corner of the ribbon.
- Click Options at the very bottom of the left sidebar.
- In the Excel Options window, ensure you are on the General tab in the left-hand navigation pane.
- Look at the very first section at the top of the page, labeled “User Interface options.”
- The very first checkbox in this section is labeled Show Mini Toolbar on selection.
- Uncheck this box.
- Click OK at the bottom of the window to apply your changes.
Now, when you select text or highlight a cell, your cursor will remain completely unobstructed. If you ever need those formatting tools, they are still permanently available in the “Home” tab on the main ribbon.
