How to Completely Disable ‘Recent Workbooks’ List in Microsoft Excel

Whenever you open Microsoft Excel, the very first screen you are greeted with is the “Start” page, which prominently displays a massive list of your most “Recent Workbooks.” This exact same list is also visible if you click “File” and navigate to the “Open” tab. Excel constantly monitors every single file you touch and permanently pins the file paths to this list for quick access.

While this is convenient for solitary workers, it is a catastrophic privacy risk for anyone who shares a computer or frequently presents their screen during meetings. If you are a manager who just finished reviewing a highly confidential document titled “Q4_Layoff_List.xlsx,” that file name will immediately appear in huge letters on your Recent list. The next time you open Excel to present a completely unrelated chart to your team via Zoom, the entire room will instantly see the sensitive file name. To absolutely guarantee that your file history remains completely private and that your Start screen remains totally blank, you must completely disable the Recent Workbooks list.

Disabling the Recent List via Excel Options

You can force Excel to forget your history and permanently stop recording new file paths by modifying the Advanced display options.

  1. Open the Microsoft Excel desktop application.
  2. Bypass the Start Screen by clicking Blank workbook to enter the main editing interface.
  3. Look at the main menu ribbon at the top of the screen and click on File (in the top-left corner).
  4. Scroll to the absolute bottom of the left-hand blue sidebar and click on Options.
  5. A new Options window will appear. In the left-hand menu, click on Advanced.
  6. Scroll down the main panel until you find the section labelled “Display.”
  7. Look for the setting labelled Show this number of Recent Workbooks:.
  8. Change the numerical value in the box to exactly 0.
  9. (Optional): Directly below it, change the value for Quickly access this number of Recent Workbooks: to 0 as well.
  10. Click OK at the bottom of the window to save your changes.

The change takes effect instantly. Excel will instantly purge its internal cache of your file history. The next time you open the application or navigate to the “Open” menu, the Recent list will be completely blank, ensuring your confidential file names remain entirely hidden from wandering eyes.
