When browsing multiple websites simultaneously, unexpected loud audio from autoplaying advertisements, embedded video feeds, or background web applications can be startling and disruptive. Instead of scrambling to lower your computer’s master volume or frantically searching through dozens of open tabs to locate the source of the noise, Microsoft Edge provides convenient built-in tools to identify and silence audio on any individual tab with a single click.
In this guide, you will learn how to spot noisy tabs instantly in Microsoft Edge, use the one-click tab speaker icon, mute tabs using context menus and keyboard shortcuts, and manage site-wide sound permissions.
Why Mute Individual Tabs Instead of Master System Volume?
Muting a specific browser tab is far more effective than adjusting system-wide audio levels:
- Preserves essential audio: You can silence noisy news articles or social media feeds without interrupting background Spotify music, YouTube tutorials, or active Microsoft Teams calls.
- Maintains video progress: Muting a tab keeps the video or stream playing silently in the background, allowing you to monitor progress without listening to the audio track.
- Prevents sudden audio shocks: Identifying noisy tabs quickly allows you to silence unexpected audio before it disrupts quiet office environments or online meetings.
Method 1: Click the Speaker Icon on the Tab Title
Microsoft Edge visually identifies every tab that is actively producing audio:
- Look across your tab strip at the top of the browser window (or down your vertical tab bar if vertical tabs are enabled).
- Any tab actively playing sound will display a small Speaker icon on the right-hand side of its tab label.
- Simply click directly on the Speaker icon.
- The icon will immediately change to a speaker with a slash through it, indicating that the tab is muted.
To unmute the audio at any time, click the slashed speaker icon once more to restore full volume.
Method 2: Mute via the Tab Context Menu
If you have many tabs open and the tab width is too narrow to display the speaker icon easily:
- Right-click on the tab that is producing sound (or any tab you wish to pre-emptively silence).
- From the context menu, select Mute tab.
- The tab will immediately fall silent, displaying the muted speaker symbol on its title.
To restore sound using this method, right-click the tab again and select Unmute tab.
Method 3: Use the Keyboard Shortcut
For power users who prefer keyboard navigation:
- Click on or switch to the noisy tab to make it active.
- Press Ctrl + M on Windows (or Cmd + M on macOS).
- The active tab will toggle between muted and unmuted instantly.
Method 4: Permanently Mute a Website in Edge Settings
If a specific website persistently autoplays loud videos every time you visit, you can permanently revoke its sound permissions:
- Navigate to the problematic website in Microsoft Edge.
- Click the padlock or site information icon (View site information) located on the far left side of the address bar.
- In the menu that appears, click Permissions for this site.
- In the Site Permissions tab, locate Sound in the list.
- Change the drop-down setting from Allow (default) to Block.
From that moment on, Microsoft Edge will automatically block all audio playback on that entire domain until you choose to restore permission.
