Every time you launch Microsoft Edge or press Ctrl + T to open a new tab, the default new tab page greets you with weather widgets, sponsored search shortcuts, trending headlines, celebrity gossip, and dynamic advertisements powered by MSN. While entertaining for casual browsing, this constant bombardment of visual noise is highly distracting during work or study sessions and consumes bandwidth loading background feeds. Microsoft Edge includes built-in layout toggles that let you strip away the clutter completely.
Why Clean Up the Edge New Tab Page?
A minimalist new tab page creates a calmer, more productive browser experience:
- Eliminate Distractions: Stops clickbait news stories and tabloid headlines from derailing your focus when opening tabs for work tasks.
- Accelerate Tab Loading: A clean tab opens instantaneously without waiting for external advertising scripts and news APIs to connect.
- Reduce Bandwidth & Memory: Disabling active video tiles and animated web feeds conserves battery and RAM on portable laptops.
How to Choose a Minimalist Layout (Focused Mode)
Edge includes three preset layouts accessible directly from the new tab page:
- Open a new tab in Microsoft Edge.
- Click the Page Settings gear icon in the top-right corner of the new tab page (beneath the window controls).
- Under the Layout section, select Focused.
- Focused mode immediately strips out the full-screen daily wallpaper image and hides the scrolling news feed, leaving a simple search bar and compact shortcut icons.
How to Completely Disable the MSN News Feed and Ads
To achieve a completely distraction-free blank canvas without any background news cards:
- On the New Tab page, click the Page Settings gear icon again.
- Click on Custom layout.
- Under Quick links, choose whether to show 1 row, 2 rows, or choose Off to remove all shortcut tiles entirely.
- Under Background, select Off for a pure, clean solid background, or keep Image or video of the day if you enjoy nature wallpapers.
- Look for the Content dropdown setting near the bottom of the menu.
- Change it from Content visible or Headings only to Content off.
- Close the Page Settings panel. The entire bottom half of your screen will clear immediately, leaving only your search bar on a clean background.
Disabling Sponsored Links and Weather Widgets
In the same Custom settings pane, toggle off Show weather and Promoted links. This guarantees that commercial partner icons and external promotional links never appear among your personal browsing shortcuts.
