How to Completely Disable ‘Presenter View’ and Mirror Your Screen in PowerPoint

When you connect your laptop to an external projector or a secondary monitor and launch a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation, the software automatically assumes you want to use “Presenter View.” In this mode, the projector displays the full-screen slides for your audience, while your laptop screen displays a complex dashboard containing your speaker notes, a timer, and a preview of the upcoming slide.

While Presenter View is incredibly useful for formal keynote speeches, it can be highly confusing in a collaborative meeting environment where you might need to quickly switch between PowerPoint and another application (like a web browser or an Excel spreadsheet). If you simply want your laptop screen to perfectly mirror exactly what the audience is seeing on the projector, you need to completely disable Presenter View.

Disabling Presenter View Before You Start

You can turn off this feature globally in the main PowerPoint settings before you even plug your laptop into the projector.

1. Open the Microsoft PowerPoint desktop application and open your presentation file.
2. Look at the main menu ribbon across the top of the screen and click on the Slide Show tab.
3. Look toward the right side of the ribbon for a group of settings titled Monitors.
4. You will see a checkbox labelled Use Presenter View.
5. Click the checkbox to uncheck it.

Now, when you click the “Start from Beginning” button, PowerPoint will simply launch the presentation full-screen on whatever monitor is designated as your primary display, completely ignoring the dual-screen dashboard feature.

Mirroring the Display in Windows

If you have unchecked “Use Presenter View” but your audience is still just staring at your desktop wallpaper while the presentation plays only on your laptop, you need to tell Windows to duplicate your screens.

Even with Presenter View disabled, Windows might still be treating the projector as an “Extended Desktop” (a second, empty monitor beside your main one). To fix this instantly:

1. Press the Windows Key + P on your keyboard. This opens the quick Project menu on the right side of your screen.
2. Click on Duplicate from the list of options.

Your laptop screen will likely flicker for a second, and then the projector will show an exact, 1:1 mirror image of your laptop screen. When you launch your PowerPoint presentation, both you and your audience will see the exact same full-screen slide.
