The Mini Toolbar is a contextual formatting menu in Microsoft PowerPoint that automatically materializes as a faint, translucent box whenever you highlight text on a slide. If you hover your mouse over it, the toolbar becomes opaque, offering quick access to common formatting commands like font size, colour, bolding, and bullet points. Microsoft designed this feature to save you from having to drag your mouse all the way up to the main Ribbon. However, for users who prefer using keyboard shortcuts for formatting, or those who find the floating box visually distracting while trying to read the text they just selected, the Mini Toolbar is a constant annoyance.
This guide explains how to completely disable the Mini Toolbar in Microsoft PowerPoint, ensuring it never appears when selecting text.
Disable the Mini Toolbar via PowerPoint Options
The setting to disable this feature is controlled globally across the application, meaning you only need to change it once, and it will apply to all future presentations.
- Launch Microsoft PowerPoint and open any presentation (or start a blank one).
- Click on the File tab located in the top-left corner of the Ribbon interface.
- At the very bottom of the left-hand navigation pane, click on Options.
- The PowerPoint Options dialogue box will appear. Ensure that the General tab is selected on the left side of the window.
- Look at the very first section at the top of the right-hand pane, labelled User Interface options.
- Locate the checkbox for Show Mini Toolbar on selection.
- Uncheck the box.
- Click OK at the bottom of the window to apply and save the changes.
Verify the Change
To confirm the setting has been successfully applied, navigate to any slide containing a text box.
- Click and drag your mouse cursor to highlight a sentence or paragraph.
- Release the mouse button.
- Hover your mouse directly over the highlighted text.
The translucent floating formatting box will no longer appear. To change the font, color, or alignment of the selected text moving forward, you must use the standard formatting tools located in the Home tab of the main Ribbon at the top of the screen, or rely entirely on keyboard shortcuts (such as Ctrl + B for bold).
