How to Completely Disable ‘AutoRecovery’ (Background Saves) in Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word utilizes a feature called AutoRecovery to protect you from catastrophic data loss. By default, every 10 minutes, Word pauses momentarily to write a temporary backup copy of your active document to a hidden folder on your hard drive. If your computer suddenly loses power, or if the Word application crashes unexpectedly, this background save ensures that you can recover the vast majority of your unsaved work upon reboot.

While AutoRecovery is generally considered a critical safety net, it can introduce severe performance bottlenecks when working with massive documents. If you are editing a 500-page manuscript loaded with high-resolution images, complex tables, and embedded objects, the background save process can freeze the application interface for several seconds every time it triggers. This constant stuttering completely disrupts the writing flow. If you are extremely diligent about manually saving your work (pressing Ctrl + S) and prioritize uninterrupted performance, you can completely disable the AutoRecovery feature.

Why Disable AutoRecovery in Microsoft Word?

Power users generally disable background saves in the following scenarios:

  • Application Freezing: Saving massive, gigabyte-sized documents takes time. Disabling AutoRecovery prevents the software from locking up your keyboard input while it writes to the disk.
  • Network Drive Latency: If you are working on a document hosted on a slow corporate network share (NAS) or a highly latent VPN connection, the background save process can cause the entire system to hang.
  • Strict Version Control: Some users prefer to maintain absolute, manual control over when a document state is committed to disk, avoiding the creation of hidden temporary files.

How to Turn Off ‘AutoRecovery’ (Background Saves) in Microsoft Word

You can adjust or completely disable the background saving interval through the advanced Word Options menu.

  1. Open Microsoft Word.
  2. Click on the File tab in the top-left corner of the ribbon.
  3. Select Options at the very bottom of the left-hand navigation pane.
  4. In the Word Options window, click on Save in the left sidebar.
  5. Look for the section titled “Save documents”.
  6. Locate the checkbox labeled Save AutoRecover information every [ X ] minutes.
  7. To completely disable the feature, uncheck the box.
  8. (Alternative) If you want to keep the safety net but reduce the frequency of the freezes, keep the box checked but change the interval from 10 minutes to 60 minutes.
  9. Click OK to apply your changes.

Warning: With AutoRecovery disabled, you are entirely responsible for saving your data. If Word crashes before you manually save your document, all unsaved progress will be permanently lost.
