How to Completely Disable ‘Automatic Text Fit’ (Shrink to Fit) in PowerPoint

Microsoft PowerPoint includes a feature called “AutoFit” which attempts to automatically resize your text if you type more words than can naturally fit inside a text box. As you continue typing, PowerPoint will aggressively shrink the font size, reducing it from a highly legible 32-point font down to a microscopic 12-point font just to cram everything into the box.

For professional presentations, this is an absolute disaster. It destroys the visual consistency of your slides, resulting in some slides having massive text and others having tiny text. Professional design dictates that if you have too much text to fit on one slide, you should split the content across two slides, not shrink the font. If you want to force yourself to adhere to strict design rules, you must turn AutoFit off.

Disabling AutoFit for a Specific Text Box

If you only want to stop the shrinking behavior on one specific slide that is giving you trouble, you can disable it locally without affecting the rest of the presentation.

  1. Right-click on the edge of the problematic text box.
  2. Select Format Shape from the context menu.
  3. A sidebar will appear on the right side of the screen. At the top of this sidebar, click on Text Options.
  4. Below that, click on the icon that looks like a text box (the Textbox icon).
  5. In the expanded menu, look under the “Text Box” header. You will see three options: Do not Autofit, Shrink text on overflow, and Resize shape to fit text.
  6. Select the radio button next to Do not Autofit.

Now, if you type too much text, it will simply overflow outside the boundaries of the box, visually signalling to you that you need to edit your content down rather than shrinking the font.

Disabling AutoFit Globally

If you are a professional designer who never wants PowerPoint to alter your chosen font sizes automatically, you can disable the feature globally in the AutoCorrect options.

  1. Look at the main menu ribbon and click on File (top-left corner).
  2. Click on Options at the bottom of the left sidebar.
  3. In the PowerPoint Options window, click on Proofing in the left menu.
  4. Click the large AutoCorrect Options… button.
  5. A new window will appear. Click on the AutoFormat As You Type tab.
  6. Look under the section labelled “Apply as you type.”
  7. You will see two checkboxes: AutoFit title text to placeholder and AutoFit body text to placeholder.
  8. Click both checkboxes to uncheck them.
  9. Click OK to close the windows.

From this point forward, Microsoft PowerPoint will respect your chosen font sizes globally, ensuring complete typographical consistency across every single slide you create.
