How to Completely Disable ‘AutoFormat As You Type’ (Automatic Lists and Links) in Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word includes an aggressive formatting engine called “AutoFormat As You Type.” As the name implies, this feature constantly monitors your keystrokes and silently alters your text in real-time. If you type a 1. followed by a space, it instantly converts your text into a heavily indented, automated numbered list. If you type a web address, it instantly turns it into a clickable blue hyperlink. If you type two hyphens (--), it violently merges them into an elongated em-dash.

While this automation is designed to save time for casual typists, it is an absolute nightmare for programmers drafting technical documentation, legal professionals writing strict contracts, or anyone who simply wants absolute control over their document’s layout. Automated lists frequently break complex paragraph indentations, and automatic hyperlinks ruin the pristine black-and-white aesthetic of a printed document. If you want Word to act like a strict, literal text editor that only formats exactly what you tell it to format, you must completely disable the AutoFormat engine.

Disabling AutoFormat via AutoCorrect Options

Microsoft buries the off switches for these real-time formatting rules deep within the Proofing settings.

  1. Open the Microsoft Word desktop application.
  2. Bypass the Start Screen by clicking Blank document to enter the main editing interface.
  3. Look at the main menu ribbon at the top of the screen and click on File (in the top-left corner).
  4. Scroll to the absolute bottom of the left-hand blue sidebar and click on Options.
  5. A new Options window will appear. In the left-hand menu, click on Proofing.
  6. In the main panel, click the large button at the top labelled AutoCorrect Options….
  7. A new, smaller dialogue box will open. Click on the tab labelled AutoFormat As You Type.

Killing the Specific Formatting Rules

You will now see a massive list of checkboxes governing Word’s automated behaviour. To completely castrate the engine, you must uncheck almost everything.

  • Under “Replace as you type,” uncheck Straight quotes with smart quotes and Internet and network paths with hyperlinks.
  • Under “Apply as you type,” uncheck Automatic bulleted lists and Automatic numbered lists.
  • Under “Automatically as you type,” uncheck Format beginning of list item like the one before it.

Click OK on both open windows to save your changes. The modification takes effect instantly. The next time you type a number followed by a period, it will remain exactly as you typed it—a simple line of text, completely devoid of automated indentation or bullet-point mechanics.
