The Vanishing Launcher
Ubuntu utilizes a modified version of the GNOME desktop environment, featuring a prominent dock (often called the launcher or taskbar) located on the left side of the screen. By default, this dock is usually visible at all times. However, users can configure a setting called “Auto-hide.” When enabled, the dock automatically slides off the screen the moment an application window touches or overlaps its screen space. While this reclaims a few pixels of horizontal screen real estate, it can be deeply frustrating if you rely on the dock for quick app switching, as you must constantly slam your mouse cursor against the edge of the screen to force it to reappear.
Pinning the Dock to the Screen
To ensure your application shortcuts are always instantly accessible and stop Ubuntu from automatically hiding the dock, you must disable the auto-hide behavior in the Appearance settings.
Click the system menu in the top-right corner of the Ubuntu top bar (where the power and network icons reside) and select Settings. In the left-hand navigation sidebar, look for Appearance or Ubuntu Desktop (depending on your specific Ubuntu version). Click on it. In the main panel, scroll down to the section specifically labelled Dock. Look for the toggle switch named Auto-hide the Dock. Click this toggle so that it turns grey (Off). The Ubuntu dock will instantly slide back onto the screen and remain permanently pinned to the edge, regardless of where you move your application windows.
