How to Change the Default Save Location for Screenshots in Ubuntu

By default, Ubuntu saves screenshots directly into the “Pictures” directory. If you prefer them saved to your Desktop or a dedicated folder, you can change the default location using the terminal or dconf Editor.

How to Change the Save Location

  1. Open your terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T).
  2. Use the gsettings command to set the new directory. For example, to save to Desktop, type: gsettings set org.gnome.gnome-screenshot auto-save-directory 'file:///home/YOUR_USERNAME/Desktop'
  3. Press Enter. Next time you take a screenshot, it will save there automatically.
