How to Use the Linux ssh Command for Remote Access

The Physical Distance Problem

You have just rented a powerful Linux web server from a cloud hosting provider like AWS or DigitalOcean. It has a massive processor and unlimited bandwidth, and it is physically located in a data centre in Frankfurt, Germany. You are sitting in your home office in Chicago.

You need to install software, configure firewalls, and upload files to that server in Germany. You obviously cannot plug a physical keyboard into it. Furthermore, enterprise Linux servers do not have graphical user interfaces (GUIs) like Windows; they only have a black command-line terminal.

To control that remote machine, you must use the ssh command. Short for “Secure Shell,” ssh is the industry-standard cryptographic network protocol used by every system administrator on earth to securely log into and execute commands on remote Linux servers over the internet.

Understanding the Syntax

To use the ssh command, you must know three pieces of information provided by your hosting company:

  1. The username of the remote server (often root or ubuntu).
  2. The IP address of the remote server (e.g., 192.168.1.100).
  3. The password or the SSH Key file.

Open the terminal on your local computer (macOS Terminal, Linux Terminal, or Windows PowerShell). The standard syntax for initiating the connection is ssh username@ip_address.

For example, if you want to log in as the root administrator to a server with the IP address 203.0.113.50, you would type:

ssh [email protected]

The First Connection and Passwords

When you press Enter, your computer reaches out across the internet to the server in Germany. If it connects, the server will ask you to verify its identity. You will see a message warning you that the “authenticity of the host can’t be established” and asking if you want to continue connecting.

Type yes and press Enter.

Next, the server will ask for your password:

Important Note: When you type your password into a Linux terminal, absolutely nothing will appear on the screen. There are no asterisks and the cursor does not move. This is a security feature to prevent people from guessing password lengths. Type your password blindly and confidently, then press Enter.

Using SSH Keys (The Professional Method)

While typing a password works, it is insecure and vulnerable to brute-force hacking attacks. Professional developers never use passwords to connect via SSH; they use SSH Keys.

An SSH key is a cryptographically secure file that acts as an unforgeable digital passport. When you generate an SSH key, you create two files: a “Public” key and a “Private” key.

  • You upload the Public key to the server in Germany.
  • You keep the Private key permanently stored on your laptop in Chicago.

When you type the ssh [email protected] command, the server in Germany asks your laptop, “Do you have the matching Private key?” Your laptop silently presents the key file, and the server instantly logs you in without ever asking for a password.

If you are given an SSH key file (usually named something like my_key.pem) instead of a password, you tell the ssh command to use that specific file by adding the -i (identity) flag.

ssh -i /path/to/my_key.pem [email protected]

Working on the Remote Server

Once you are successfully logged in, your terminal prompt will change. Instead of saying local-macbook:~, it will say root@server:~. Your keyboard is now directly wired to the server in Germany. Any command you type (like ls, apt-get install, or rm) will execute on the remote machine, not your local laptop.

When you are finished configuring the server, simply type exit and press Enter. The connection will close, and your terminal will return to controlling your local computer.

Stop trying to manage remote servers through clunky web control panels. By mastering the ssh command, you gain direct, highly secure, command-line access to any Linux machine on the planet, exactly as if you were sitting right in front of it.
