The internet is a global platform, which means you will frequently encounter incredibly useful tutorials, news articles, or shopping websites written entirely in a language you do not understand. In the past, you had to manually copy blocks of text and paste them into a separate Google Translate window, which destroyed the formatting and made reading tedious.
To eliminate this friction, Google integrated its powerful translation engine directly into the core code of the Chrome browser, allowing you to instantly translate an entire webpage—including buttons, menus, and forms—without ever leaving the site.
How to Trigger the Translator
Chrome is usually smart enough to detect when a webpage is not written in your operating system’s default language and will automatically offer to translate it via a small pop-up near the address bar. However, if that pop-up fails to appear, you can force the translation manually.
- Navigate to the foreign-language webpage in Google Chrome.
- Find any blank, empty space on the webpage (do not click directly on an image or a hyperlink).
- Right-click the empty space to open the context menu.
- Select Translate to English (or whatever your default system language is).
The entire webpage will instantly refresh. All the foreign text will be replaced with your chosen language while perfectly maintaining the original website’s layout, font sizes, and structural formatting.
Changing the Target Language
If you are bilingual and want to translate a Spanish website into French rather than English, you can easily adjust the target language.
- After you trigger the initial translation, look at the right side of your URL address bar. You will see a small, black-and-white Google Translate icon (it looks like a ‘G’ next to a foreign character).
- Click that icon. A small menu will drop down.
- Click the three vertical dots (the Options menu) inside that drop-down.
- Select Choose another language.
- Select your desired language from the massive dropdown list and click the blue Translate button.
If you frequently visit websites in a specific language (e.g., you are reading a lot of Japanese news), you can click those same three dots and select “Always translate Japanese,” instructing Chrome to execute this process automatically every time you load a Japanese URL in the future.
