How to Disable the ‘Pageless’ Format in Google Docs

Google Docs recently introduced a feature called “Pageless” formatting. When activated, this mode removes all page boundaries, margins, and physical page breaks. The document transforms into one continuous, infinitely scrolling digital canvas that dynamically resizes to fit whatever screen you are using.

While this is fantastic for drafting web copy or brainstorming, it is terrible if you are writing an essay, formatting a resume, or drafting a document that will eventually be printed on physical A4 paper. Without visible page breaks, it is impossible to know how your text will align on a printed page.

How to Disable the Pageless Format

You can easily revert any document back to the traditional, physical page layout.

  1. Open your document in Google Docs.
  2. Look at the top menu bar and click on File.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom of the drop-down menu and click on Page setup.
  4. A settings box will appear in the middle of your screen. Look at the very top of this box; you will see two distinct tabs: “Pages” and “Pageless.”
  5. Click on the Pages tab.
  6. Click the blue OK button at the bottom of the window.

Your document will instantly reformat. The grey background will return, clearly showing the distinct white borders of your physical pages, along with your headers, footers, and page breaks.

How to Make ‘Pages’ the Default

If you never want to use the Pageless format again, you can force Google Docs to default to standard pages for all future documents.

  1. Return to File > Page setup.
  2. Ensure the Pages tab is selected.
  3. Before clicking OK, look at the bottom left corner of the dialogue box and click the Set as default button.
  4. Now click OK.

From this point forward, every new blank document you create will load with traditional physical page boundaries.
