How to Unblock Someone on Google Drive

Google Drive is frequently targeted by spammers who exploit the “Share” feature to aggressively push scam documents, malicious links, and phishing spreadsheets directly into your file list. The most effective way to stop this is to right-click the file and block the user who sent it.

However, if you accidentally block a legitimate colleague or a client during a frantic cleanup of your inbox, they will be completely unable to share documents with you. They won’t be able to tag you in comments, and you will not be able to see files they own. To restore collaboration, you must dig into the Google Account settings to unblock them.

Method 1: Unblock Directly Within Google Drive

If you realize your mistake immediately (or if you know exactly which file caused the issue), you can reverse the block directly from the Google Drive interface.

  1. Open Google Drive (drive.google.com) on a desktop browser.
  2. Look at the absolute top-right corner of the screen and click your Profile Picture (or initial).
  3. Click the Manage your Google Account button. (This opens a new tab with your centralized Google settings).
  4. Wait, there is a faster way if you still have the file. If the file they shared with you is still visible in your “Shared with me” folder, simply right-click the file.
  5. In the context menu, select Unblock [email address].

Method 2: The Centralized Block List (If the File is Gone)

If you blocked a coworker three weeks ago and have long since deleted the file they sent you, you cannot right-click it. You must find the master block list hidden deep within your Google Account. Note: This block list is universal. Unblocking them in Drive also unblocks them in Gmail, Google Chat, and Google Photos.

  1. Open Google Drive on a desktop browser.
  2. Click your Profile Picture in the top right corner.
  3. Click the Manage your Google Account button. A new tab will open.
  4. Look at the navigation menu on the left side of the screen and click on People & sharing.
  5. Scroll down to the “Contacts” section.
  6. Click on the row labeled Blocked.

You will now see a chronological list of every single email address you have ever blocked across the entire Google ecosystem.

  1. Scroll through the list until you find the email address of the person you want to restore.
  2. Click the X icon (or the “Remove” button) immediately to the right of their name.

The restriction is instantly lifted. They will not receive an email notification telling them they were unblocked, but the next time they attempt to type your email address into a Google Drive sharing box, it will successfully autocomplete and send the file.

Method 3: Unblocking on the Mobile App (iOS/Android)

If you are away from your computer, you can access the exact same master block list using the Google Drive app on your smartphone.

  1. Open the Google Drive app.
  2. Tap your Profile Picture in the top right corner.
  3. Tap the Manage your Google Account button (or “Google Account” on some Android builds).
  4. A settings overlay will appear. Look at the horizontal scrolling menu at the very top (Home, Personal info, Data & privacy).
  5. Swipe that menu to the left until you see People & sharing. Tap it.
  6. Scroll down and tap on Blocked.
  7. Find the person on the list and tap the X next to their name to remove the restriction.

What Happens After You Unblock Them?

Unblocking a user does not magically restore all the files they previously shared with you (because blocking them often deletes those files from your view). To resume collaboration, you must ask the person to manually resend the sharing invitation or link for the specific Google Doc or Spreadsheet you need to access.
