The Outline Clutter
Google Docs features a highly useful “Document Outline” sidebar on the left side of the screen, which automatically generates a clickable table of contents to help you quickly jump between sections of a lengthy report. However, the algorithm that populates this outline is occasionally overly aggressive. By default, it automatically grabs any text that you have manually bolded and enlarged, or any text it algorithmically determines might be a “Title,” and forces it into the outline hierarchy. If you are writing a document with stylized pull quotes, large stylized numbers, or specific bolded paragraphs that are not actually structural headers, the outline quickly becomes cluttered with irrelevant text snippets.
Manually Removing the Rogue Headers
While you cannot permanently disable the underlying algorithmic detection engine, you can easily instruct Google Docs to ignore specific pieces of text and remove them from the automatically generated outline.
First, ensure the Document Outline is visible by clicking View in the top menu and checking Show outline. Next, look at the outline panel on the left side of your screen. Locate the specific rogue title or text snippet that Google Docs has incorrectly added to the list. Hover your mouse cursor directly over that item in the outline. You will see a small “X” icon appear to the right of the text. Click that X. The text will immediately be removed from the outline. Crucially, doing this does not alter or delete the actual text within the body of your document; it simply tells the algorithm to permanently ignore that specific line when building the navigational structure.
